The "database" links below will assist you in finding a photograph in the collection featuring a specific locomotive, location or event. All of these record files will eventually be available in either a document or spreadsheet file format for your use. Please feel free to download this information for your convenience and use. As with the rest of this website, these files are still "under construction" and are not complete.
The files currently listed below cover most of the black and white negatives in the collection, not including the racing photographs. The vast majority of these negatives are not presented on the website in any form yet. If you have a specific need for any of the negatives in the database please don't hesitate to contact us to make them available for you. We will try to respond to these requests in a timely manner, but of course our orders and basic website maintenance will take a higher priority. We are trying to get at least 50 new photos a week onto the website.
Negatives are numbered in the following informal "system". Scenic portraits are referred to as "Road" negatives and are designated with an "R", such as SPR22, which is the 22nd negative in the Southern Pacific ("SP") "Road" category. 3/4 view static photos of individual locomotives are classified as "Static" negatives and designated with an "S", such as SFS32, which denotes the 32nd negative in the Santa Fe ("SF") "Static" category. The two other categories are "D" or "Detail" negatives of locomotives and equipment and "STK" or rolling "STocK" negatives.
The remaining undocumented negatives are the color negatives that form the bulk of the collection such as SP1, SF1 and UP1. The negatives were previously sealed in cold storage and were never cataloged. These are the photos predominantly offered on the website at present. We are working on building corresponding data files for these negatives as the website grows. Eventually we will be able to create a "database" (spreadsheet) of all negatives which will allow us to sort the entire collection by locomotive and location. It will be interesting to be able to discover how many times and where a particular locomotive has been photographed. Thank you again for your interest.
